Gleaner Life Insurance Society

Gleaner Life Insurance Society, originally the Ancient Order of Gleaners, is a fraternal benefit society based in Adrian, Michigan. The company was originally formed as the Ancient Order of Gleaners in 1894 by Grant Scolum in Caro, Michigan. On September 2nd, 1894, articles of incorporation were submitted to the Michigan Insurance Commissioner and the order was chartered later that month. In 1981, the company’s headquarters was moved to Adrian, Michigan, where it remains today.

Originally, the society catered to farmers, gardeners and individuals involved in similar activities who lived in towns with less than 3,000 residents. By the 1970s, their target market expanded to include all individuals of good moral character over the age of sixteen. As of 2013, the society had a recorded 74,000 members. As well as providing insurance benefits, the company also sponsors scholarships and organizes recreational activities including baseball, bowling, square dancing, and picnics for its members.
