In 2004, the Canadian multinational life insurance company, Manulife Financial, acquired John Hancock and operates it as an independent subsidiary. The company, along with the majority of Manulife’s U.S. assets, continues to operate under the John Hancock name. The company’s headquarters, along with its 1,100 employees, are based at 200 Berkeley Street in Boston, Massachusetts. over the years the company underwent changes in its name, from John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company to John Hancock Financial Services, Inc., while life insurance continued to be sold by an entity known as the John Hancock Variable Life Insurance Company, a subsidiary of John Hancock Financial Services Inc.
