ManhattanLife of America Insurance Company, also known as The Manhattan Life Insurance Company, is a life insurance company that was originally domiciled in New York. It now operates as a subsidiary of Manhattan Life Group in Houston, Texas. The company was incorporated on May 29, 1850, and it offers plans, products, and services under the brand name ManhattanLife. The company was initially a joint-stock company, providing corporate stability by creating a board of directors with a financial interest in the management. It transitioned from a mixed stock and policy holder model to a full stock ownership model between 1984 and 1986. The company has faced policyholder disclosure violations in the past, but actions were taken to satisfy each of the citations in a manner acceptable to the Department of Financial Services. In June 2020, ManhattanLife confirmed plans to grow its national presence with the purchase of Standard Life and Casualty Insurance Company. The company’s headquarters were once located in the first skyscraper in New York, the Manhattan Life Insurance Building at 66 Broadway, which was completed in 1894.
