The company was founded in 1902 as Physicians Mutual Insurance Company by Edwin E. Elliott and initially sold health insurance to medical professionals. In 1962, it began offering policies to the general public and expanded into life insurance in 1970 with the establishment of Physicians Life Insurance Company. In 2012, the company entered the funeral pre-planning business to meet the increasing demands of funeral home owners and the families they represent.
