In 2022, it also began to offer Pet Insurance. The company holds over US$4 billion in assets and employs over 1000 people. It was founded in 1902 as Physicians Mutual Insurance Company by Edwin E. Elliott and initially sold health insurance to medical professionals. In 1962, it began offering policies to the general public and expanded into life insurance in 1970 when it founded Physicians Life Insurance Company. In 2012, the company joined the funeral pre-planning business to better address the increasing demands of funeral home owners and the families they represent.
